Luther
Luther is a term that refers to Martin Luther, a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation. It may also refer to various other topics related to Martin Luther or the Lutheran tradition.
Martin Luther[edit | edit source]
Martin Luther (1483–1546) was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, monk, and a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation. Luther came to reject several teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. He strongly disputed the Catholic view on indulgences. Luther proposed an academic discussion of the practice and efficacy of indulgences in his Ninety-five Theses of 1517. His refusal to renounce all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the Pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the Holy Roman Emperor.
Lutheranism[edit | edit source]
Lutheranism is a major branch of Protestant Christianity which identifies with the theology of Martin Luther. Lutheranism advocates a doctrine of justification "by grace alone through faith alone on the basis of Scripture alone", the doctrine that scripture is the final authority on all matters of faith, denying the belief of the Catholic Church defined at the Council of Trent concerning authority coming from both the Scriptures and Tradition.
Other uses[edit | edit source]
