Maalox
Maalox is a brand name of an over-the-counter drug product manufactured by Novartis. It is used for the relief of heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Composition[edit | edit source]
Maalox is composed of two active ingredients: aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. These are both antacids, which work by neutralizing the acid in the stomach. Some Maalox products also contain simethicone, an anti-foaming agent which helps reduce bloating, discomfort or pain caused by excessive gas.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Maalox is used to treat symptoms caused by too much stomach acid such as heartburn, upset stomach, or indigestion. It is also used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of Maalox include constipation and diarrhea. More serious side effects can include severe stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, unusual weight loss, bone pain, and mental/mood changes.
Precautions[edit | edit source]
Before taking Maalox, individuals should inform their doctor or pharmacist if they are allergic to it or if they have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
Interactions[edit | edit source]
Maalox can interact with certain medications, including some prescription drugs. It is important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication while taking Maalox.
