Matricaria

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Matricaria is a genus of flowering plants in the Chamomile tribe within the sunflower family. Some of the species have the common name of "mayweed," but this name also refers to plants not in this genus.

Description[edit | edit source]

Most are very common in the temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and America, as well as in northern and southern Africa, and some are naturalised in Australia. Matricaria species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Angle Shades.

Species[edit | edit source]

The genus Matricaria was formerly very large, but most of the species have been transferred to other genera. Several species that are now in the genus Tripleurospermum were formerly in Matricaria. Some of the species still present in Matricaria are:

  • Matricaria discoidea - Pineappleweed
  • Matricaria occidentalis - Valley mayweed

Uses[edit | edit source]

Matricaria is a popular source of herbal remedies. Matricaria discoidea is used for making tea. Matricaria occidentalis is used in the traditional medicine of Native Americans.
