Montelukast sodium

Montelukast Sodium is a medication that is commonly used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. It is a type of drug known as a leukotriene receptor antagonist.

Montelukast Sodium is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene CysLT1 receptor. It is marketed under several brand names including Singulair and is used for the treatment of asthma, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, allergic rhinitis, and urticaria.

Montelukast Sodium is used for a number of conditions including:

Asthma: It is used for the long-term treatment of asthma in adults and children.
Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction: Montelukast Sodium is used to prevent this condition in people aged 6 years and above.
Allergic rhinitis: It is used to treat seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children aged 2 years and above, and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children aged 6 months and above.

Serious side effects may include mental/mood changes such as agitation, aggression, anxiety, problems sleeping, abnormal dreams, sleep-walking, memory/attention problems, depression, hallucinations, thoughts of harming oneself/suicide.

Montelukast Sodium works by blocking the action of leukotrienes, which are chemicals in the body that react to allergens and other triggers and cause inflammation in the lungs and tightening of the muscles around the airways.
