NADP+ (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) is a coenzyme used in anabolic reactions, which build large molecules from small molecules, in cells. It is a product of the Pentose Phosphate Pathway and is used in the Calvin cycle to help convert carbon dioxide into glucose.

Structure[edit | edit source]

NADP+ consists of two nucleotides joined through their phosphate groups. One nucleotide contains an adenine base and the other nicotinamide. The nicotinamide moiety can be attached in two orientations to its molecule, termed A-side and B-side. In the A-side, the ring is fused to the ribose moiety at the 1' and 2' positions. In the B-side, the ring is fused to the ribose at the 2' and 3' positions.

Function[edit | edit source]

NADP+ is used in anabolic reactions, which build large molecules from small molecules. It is a product of the Pentose Phosphate Pathway and is used in the Calvin cycle to help convert carbon dioxide into glucose. NADP+ is also used in the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol.

Role in Photosynthesis[edit | edit source]

In photosynthesis, NADP+ is reduced to NADPH in the light-dependent reactions, and then used as a reducing power for the biosynthetic reactions in the light-independent reactions of photosynthesis.
