Nephew
Nephew
A nephew is a term used to describe the son of a person's sibling. The term can also be used to refer to the son of a person's sibling-in-law. The female equivalent of a nephew is a niece.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The term "nephew" originated from the Old French word neveu, which in turn is derived from the Latin word nepos.
Cultural variations[edit | edit source]
In some cultures, the term nephew is used more broadly to refer to any younger male relative. In others, it is used more narrowly to refer only to the son of a brother.
Legal status[edit | edit source]
In many legal systems, nephews have certain rights and responsibilities. For example, in some jurisdictions, a nephew may be considered a legal heir if the person dies without a will.
