Pancreatic hormones

Pancreatic hormones are hormones produced by the pancreas, a glandular organ in the digestive system and endocrine system. The pancreas is responsible for producing several essential hormones, including insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin. These hormones play a crucial role in maintaining glucose homeostasis and regulating the body's metabolic processes.

Insulin

Insulin is a hormone that allows cells in the body to take in glucose and use it as a source of energy. It also helps to store excess glucose in the liver for later use. Insulin is produced by the beta cells in the Islets of Langerhans within the pancreas.

Glucagon

Glucagon is a hormone that works in opposition to insulin. It is produced by the alpha cells in the Islets of Langerhans. When the glucose levels in the blood are low, glucagon stimulates the liver to convert stored glycogen into glucose and release it into the bloodstream.

Somatostatin

Somatostatin is a hormone that inhibits the secretion of both insulin and glucagon. It is produced by the delta cells in the Islets of Langerhans. Somatostatin also inhibits the release of growth hormone from the anterior pituitary gland, and it has a variety of other effects throughout the body.

Pancreatic Polypeptide

Pancreatic Polypeptide is a hormone that is secreted by the PP cells in the Islets of Langerhans. It is released in response to eating and fasting, and it helps to regulate the secretion of pancreatic digestive enzymes and the emptying of the stomach.

Regulation of Pancreatic Hormones

The secretion of pancreatic hormones is regulated by a complex interplay of signals from the nervous system, the blood glucose levels, and other hormones in the body. For example, when blood glucose levels rise, the beta cells in the pancreas are stimulated to release insulin. Conversely, when blood glucose levels fall, the alpha cells are stimulated to release glucagon.
