Penile

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Penile refers to anything related to the penis, which is a part of the male reproductive system in mammals. The term is often used in the context of medical conditions, treatments, and anatomical studies.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The penis is an external organ located in the pelvic region. It is primarily used for sexual intercourse and urination. The penis is made up of three parts: the root, the body, and the glans. The root is attached to the pelvic bone, while the body and the glans make up the free-hanging part of the organ.

Medical Conditions[edit | edit source]

There are several medical conditions that can affect the penis. These include erectile dysfunction, penile cancer, priapism, phimosis, and paraphimosis.

Erectile Dysfunction[edit | edit source]

Erectile dysfunction is a condition where a man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including physical conditions like heart disease and diabetes, psychological conditions like stress and anxiety, and certain medications.

Penile Cancer[edit | edit source]

Penile cancer is a rare type of cancer that starts in the skin cells of the penis. It can be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy.

Priapism[edit | edit source]

Priapism is a prolonged erection that lasts for more than four hours and is usually painful. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment to prevent permanent damage to the penis.

Phimosis and Paraphimosis[edit | edit source]

Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin cannot be fully retracted over the glans. Paraphimosis is a condition where the foreskin, once retracted, cannot be moved back to its original position. Both conditions can cause discomfort and complications if not treated.

Treatments[edit | edit source]

Treatments for penile conditions vary depending on the specific condition and its severity. They can range from medication and lifestyle changes for erectile dysfunction, to surgery for penile cancer and priapism.
