Pseudocyst of the auricle

A Pseudocyst of the Auricle, also known as Auricular Pseudocyst or Idiopathic Cystic Chondromalacia, is a benign, non-inflammatory condition of the ear characterized by the formation of a fluid-filled sac or cyst on the anterior part of the auricle. The condition is relatively rare and its exact cause remains unknown.

Etiology[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of Pseudocyst of the Auricle is unknown. However, it is believed to be associated with minor trauma or repeated pressure to the ear, leading to the accumulation of fluid between the cartilage and perichondrium of the auricle. Some researchers also suggest a possible link to certain systemic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

Clinical Presentation[edit | edit source]

Patients with Pseudocyst of the Auricle typically present with a painless, soft, fluctuant swelling on the anterior surface of the auricle. The swelling is usually unilateral and does not cause any hearing loss. However, if left untreated, it may lead to deformity of the ear, commonly referred to as "cauliflower ear".

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of Pseudocyst of the Auricle is primarily based on clinical examination. Imaging studies such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment options for Pseudocyst of the Auricle include aspiration of the fluid, injection of sclerosing agents, pressure dressings, and surgical intervention. The choice of treatment depends on the size of the pseudocyst, the patient's preference, and the physician's experience.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for Pseudocyst of the Auricle is generally good. However, recurrence is common, especially if the underlying cause is not addressed.
