Rima Glottidis

The Rima Glottidis is the opening between the vocal cords and the glottis. It is the narrowest portion of the larynx and plays a crucial role in phonation (the production of speech sounds) and breathing.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The Rima Glottidis is divided into two parts: the anterior Rima Vestibuli and the posterior Rima Respiratoria. The Rima Vestibuli is bound by the vestibular folds, while the Rima Respiratoria is bound by the vocal folds.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the Rima Glottidis is to control airflow in and out of the lungs during respiration. It also plays a key role in phonation, as the size and shape of the Rima Glottidis can be adjusted to modulate the pitch and volume of the voice.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Abnormalities or injuries to the Rima Glottidis can lead to a variety of voice disorders, including hoarseness, dysphonia, and aphonia. In severe cases, obstruction of the Rima Glottidis can cause stridor and potentially life-threatening airway obstruction.
