Robert McCarley

Robert W. McCarley (1937–2017) was an American neuroscientist and psychiatrist, best known for his research on the neurobiology of schizophrenia and the neurophysiology of sleep and dreaming.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

McCarley was born in 1937 in Arkansas. He received his B.A. in Chemistry from Harvard University in 1959, and his M.D. from Columbia University in 1964. He completed his residency in psychiatry at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center.

Career[edit | edit source]

McCarley served as a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and as the head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System. His research focused on the neurobiology of schizophrenia and the neurophysiology of sleep and dreaming. He was known for his work on the brainstem mechanisms of REM sleep, and for his development of the neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative hypotheses of schizophrenia.

Awards and honors[edit | edit source]

McCarley received numerous awards for his work, including the American Psychiatric Association's Award for Research in Psychiatry, the National Institute of Mental Health's MERIT Award, and the Sleep Research Society's Distinguished Scientist Award.

Death[edit | edit source]

McCarley died on June 27, 2017.
