Sinusoid

A sinusoid is a mathematical curve that describes a smooth, periodic oscillation. It is named after the function sine, of which it is the graph. It occurs often in pure and applied mathematics, as well as physics, engineering, signal processing and many other fields.

Mathematical Description

A sinusoid is the graph of the sine or cosine function. For any real number t, the value of the sine function is the y-coordinate of the point on the unit circle in the Euclidean plane that is a distance t counterclockwise from the point (1, 0). Similarly, the cosine function gives the x-coordinate.

Applications

Sinusoids are used in many areas of science and engineering to model waves, oscillations, and other periodic phenomena. They are fundamental to the study of acoustics, vibrations, electromagnetism, and many other fields.
