Slogan

A slogan is a memorable motto or phrase used in a clan, political, commercial, religious, and other context as a repetitive expression of an idea or purpose, with the goal of persuading members of the public or a more defined target group. The Oxford Dictionary of English defines a slogan as "a short and striking or memorable phrase used in advertising." A slogan usually has the attributes of being memorable, very concise and these phrases or sentences draw attention to the product, service or cause that it is representing.

Etymology

The term slogan is derived from slogorn which was an Anglicisation of the Scottish Gaelic and Irish sluagh-ghairm (sluagh "army", "host" + gairm "cry"). Slogans vary from the written and the visual to the chanted and the vulgar. Their simple rhetorical nature usually leaves little room for detail and a chanted slogan may serve more as social expression of unified purpose than as communication to an intended audience.

Usage

Slogans are used in a variety of contexts. They can be used in advertising and marketing to capture the attention of the audience and make a product or service stand out. In politics, slogans are often used to communicate the platform or goals of a candidate or party. In social movements, slogans can serve to unify participants and communicate the cause they are advocating for.

Commercial slogans

Commercial slogans, taglines, catchphrases or straplines serve to define a companies' products or services in the minds of consumers. The purposes and tactics vary greatly. Some slogans are created just for specific limited-time campaigns; others are intended for long term use. Some slogans are intended to be humorous, others to be serious or inspirational.

Political slogans

Political slogans include catch phrases or sound bites that encapsulate a politician's message. Political slogan is often used by a political party or a politician for the purpose of conveying a particular message. One of the most common uses of this phrase is to capture the essence of a candidate's platform in a catchy and memorable way.
