Submental

Submental refers to the anatomical area directly beneath the chin. It is often used in the context of medical and dental procedures, such as Submental Intubation and Submental Lymph Nodes examination.

Anatomy

The submental region is a triangular area on the anterior part of the neck. It is limited by the anterior belly of the digastric muscle and the hyoid bone. The floor of the submental region is formed by the mylohyoid muscles, while the roof is the skin and superficial fascia.

Clinical Significance

The submental region is clinically significant in several medical and dental procedures. For instance, Submental Intubation is a technique used in maxillofacial surgery to secure the airway while avoiding the complications of Tracheostomy.

The Submental Lymph Nodes, located in the submental region, are also of clinical importance. They drain the medial part of the lower lip, the floor of the mouth, and the apex of the tongue. Enlargement of these lymph nodes may indicate an infection or malignancy.
