Table service

Table service is a form of service in restaurants, pubs, and bars where food or drinks are served to the customer's table by a server, also known as a waiter or waitress. This contrasts with self-service, where the customer generally orders or selects the food at the counter.

Types of table service[edit | edit source]

There are several types of table service, including:

  • English service: The host serves all food from the left. Plates are cleared from the right, glasses from the right; again by the host.
  • French service: The host serves from the right, food is presented in a dish, not plated.
  • Russian service: The food is fully prepared and pre-cut in the kitchen and served to each guest by servers who carry the food on large platters and serve each guest individually.
  • American service: The food is plated in the kitchen and served to the guest on their right side. Drinks are served from the right, cleared from the right and food is served from the left, cleared from the left.
  • Family style: Food is served in large dishes for guest self-service.
