Triceps
Triceps or triceps brachii is a large muscle on the back of the upper limb of many vertebrates. It is the muscle principally responsible for extension of the elbow joint (straightening of the arm).
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The triceps brachii has three heads. The long head arises from the scapula and the lateral and medial heads arise from the humerus. The fibers converge to a single tendon to insert onto the olecranon process of the ulna.
Function[edit | edit source]
The triceps brachii primarily functions to extend the elbow and adduct the arm. It is also involved in retroversion and adduction of the arm.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Injury to the triceps can result in triceps tendonitis, a condition characterized by pain and swelling in the area where the triceps tendon attaches to the elbow.
