Trophoblastic Disease

Trophoblastic disease is a group of rare tumors that involve abnormal growth of cells inside a woman's uterus. Trophoblastic disease almost always occurs as a result of pregnancy. The two main types of trophoblastic disease are Hydatidiform Mole and Choriocarcinoma.

Types of Trophoblastic Disease[edit | edit source]

Hydatidiform Mole[edit | edit source]

A Hydatidiform Mole is a type of gestational trophoblastic disease that occurs when the fertilization of an egg by a sperm results in an abnormal pregnancy. There are two types of hydatidiform moles: complete and partial.

Complete Hydatidiform Mole[edit | edit source]

A complete hydatidiform mole occurs when an empty egg is fertilized by one or two sperm, and all the genetic material is from the father.

Partial Hydatidiform Mole[edit | edit source]

A partial hydatidiform mole occurs when a normal egg is fertilized by two sperm or by one sperm that duplicates itself, resulting in an embryo with too many chromosomes.

Choriocarcinoma[edit | edit source]

Choriocarcinoma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that occurs in a woman's uterus (womb). The disease is a type of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD).

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The symptoms of trophoblastic disease can vary depending on the type. Common symptoms include vaginal bleeding, severe nausea and vomiting, and early preeclampsia.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Trophoblastic disease can be diagnosed through a series of tests, including a pregnancy test, ultrasound, and blood tests to measure the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for trophoblastic disease depends on the type of disease, the patient's age, and the patient's overall health. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
