Ultrasound-guided biopsy

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Ultrasound-guided biopsy is a medical procedure that uses ultrasound imaging to guide a needle towards a specific area of the body, such as a mass or lump, to collect a tissue sample for laboratory testing. This procedure is often used to diagnose various conditions, including cancer.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

The procedure begins with the patient lying down on an examination table. A radiologist or other medical professional applies a water-based gel to the area of the body where the biopsy will be performed. This gel helps to create a clear path for the ultrasound waves to reach the tissues underneath the skin.

The medical professional then places an ultrasound probe over the area. The probe sends out high-frequency sound waves that bounce off the tissues in the body. The echoes from these sound waves are converted into a real-time image on a monitor. This image helps the medical professional to guide the needle to the precise location where the tissue sample will be taken.

Once the needle is in the correct position, the medical professional collects a sample of tissue. The needle is then removed, and a bandage is applied to the area. The tissue sample is sent to a laboratory for testing.

Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]

Like any medical procedure, an ultrasound-guided biopsy carries some risks. These may include bleeding, infection, and damage to surrounding tissues. However, these risks are generally low, and the procedure is considered safe for most patients.

Benefits[edit | edit source]

The main benefit of an ultrasound-guided biopsy is that it allows for precise targeting of the area to be biopsied, which can lead to a more accurate diagnosis. It is also a minimally invasive procedure, which means it involves less pain and recovery time than a surgical biopsy.
