Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT), also known as Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET), is a form of therapy that uses virtual reality technology to treat a variety of psychological disorders. This method of therapy has been found to be particularly effective in treating phobias, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

History[edit | edit source]

Virtual Reality Therapy was first developed in the 1990s, with the advent of more sophisticated and immersive virtual reality technology. The first studies into the effectiveness of VRT were conducted by Hunter Hoffman, a researcher at the University of Washington.

Method[edit | edit source]

In Virtual Reality Therapy, patients are immersed in a computer-generated virtual environment that simulates the situations or experiences that cause them distress. The therapist can control the virtual environment and gradually increase the level of exposure to the distressing situation, helping the patient to confront and manage their fears or anxieties in a safe and controlled setting.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Virtual Reality Therapy has been used to treat a wide range of psychological disorders. Some of the most common applications include:

  • Phobias: VRT has been used to treat a variety of specific phobias, including fear of flying, fear of heights, and fear of spiders.
  • Anxiety Disorders: VRT has been found to be effective in treating various anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder and panic disorder.
  • PTSD: VRT has been used to help veterans and others suffering from PTSD by allowing them to confront and process traumatic memories in a safe and controlled environment.

Effectiveness[edit | edit source]

Numerous studies have shown that Virtual Reality Therapy can be an effective treatment for a variety of psychological disorders. A 2015 meta-analysis of 14 studies found that VRT was as effective as traditional exposure therapy in treating specific phobias.
