| Description | An invasive reed is wreaking havoc around the Great Lakes. According to David Ullrich of GLSLCI it is crowding out native wetland species and threatening the wetlands’ ability to naturally clean the water, reduce local flooding, and attract fish and wildlife. To target areas at risk and support local policies fighting the spread of this invasive species, more than 130 United States and Canadian mayors and local officials working to advance the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. Using NASA satellite data like MODIS, scientists at the Michigan Tech Research Institute in Ann Arbor created a risk map based on where the invasive reed would likely grow next, helping local governments enact policies to plan for and stop its spread.EXPLOREEARTH: NASA Tracks an Environmental Invader, NASA: Great Lakes Photo credit: Elizabeth Banda/NASA |
