Description German photo post-card of the wood workers of Damascus,famous for their Mother of Pearl furniture,also called Damascus or Syrian Style,popular with decorators the world over.Jewish, Christian and Moslem craftsmen transmitted the centuries old art to the modern time.The craftsmen are turning small wooden spindles for traditional oriental wooden screens. A small part assembled piece can be seen in the foreground and a frame ready to accept the trellis work can be seen behind the workmen. The water pipe, widely used for leisurely smoke all over the Ottoman Empire domains, is for the craftsmen's recreational use.
