Optical disc

(Redirected from Optical media)

Optical disc is a data storage medium that involves writing and reading data using light, usually a laser beam. The technology is known for its portability and durability, which makes it a popular choice for distribution of music, movies, and computer software.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of optical disc storage was first introduced in the late 1950s and early 1960s by David Paul Gregg and James Russell. The first commercial optical disc, the LaserDisc, was introduced by MCA DiscoVision in 1978. This was followed by the Compact Disc (CD) in 1982 and the Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) in 1995.

Types of Optical Discs[edit | edit source]

There are several types of optical discs, including:

  • Compact Disc (CD): This is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony and released in 1982. It can store up to 700 MB of data or 80 minutes of audio.
  • Digital Versatile Disc (DVD): A DVD can store more data than a CD. A standard DVD can hold 4.7 GB of data, while dual-layer DVDs can hold 8.5 GB.
  • Blu-ray Disc: This is a digital optical disc data storage format designed to supersede DVDs. A single-layer Blu-ray disc can store 25 GB of data, while a dual-layer Blu-ray disc can store 50 GB.

How Optical Discs Work[edit | edit source]

Data on an optical disc is stored in the form of tiny indentations known as "pits", which are burned into the disc surface during manufacturing. A laser beam is used to read these pits. When the laser hits a pit, it is reflected back differently than when it hits a flat area known as a "land". The disc drive detects these changes in reflection and interprets them as binary data.

Advantages and Disadvantages[edit | edit source]

Optical discs have several advantages, including durability, portability, and relatively low cost. However, they also have disadvantages, such as limited storage capacity compared to hard drives and solid-state drives, and susceptibility to damage from scratches and exposure to sunlight.
