Os supranaviculare

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Os Supranaviculare is a rare anatomical variant found in the human body. It is an accessory bone that is located in the foot, specifically in the region of the ankle and navicular bone.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The os supranaviculare is located on the dorsal aspect of the navicular bone, near the talus bone. It is typically small in size and can be easily mistaken for a bone fracture or avulsion fracture on radiographic imaging.

Incidence[edit | edit source]

The incidence of the os supranaviculare is relatively low, with studies estimating its presence in less than 1% of the population. It is more commonly found in adults than in children, and there is no significant difference in incidence between males and females.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

The os supranaviculare is usually asymptomatic and is often discovered incidentally during radiographic imaging for other conditions. However, in some cases, it can cause pain and discomfort, especially during physical activities that put stress on the foot, such as running or jumping. This condition is known as os supranaviculare syndrome.

Treatment for os supranaviculare syndrome typically involves conservative measures such as rest, physical therapy, and the use of orthotic devices. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove the accessory bone.
