Donald J. Cram (April 22, 1919 – June 17, 2001) was an American chemist who expanded the boundaries of organic chemistry with his research on molecular host-guest chemistry. His pioneering work laid the foundation for the development of molecular recognition, which plays a crucial role in chemical biology, pharmacology, and the design of molecular machines. Cram's contributions to chemistry were recognized with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987, which he shared with Jean-Marie Lehn and Charles J. Donald J. Cram was born in Chester, Vermont, USA. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Rollins College in Florida, where he received his B.S. degree in 1941. Following this, Cram served in the United States Navy during World War II, after which he pursued his graduate studies in chemistry. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1947, where he worked under the tutelage of Louis Fieser, a renowned organic chemist.
