Alan Edward Guttmacher

Alan Edward Guttmacher (May 19, 1898 – March 18, 1974) was an American obstetrician and gynecologist, best known for his contributions to the field of reproductive health and as a leader in the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA).

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Guttmacher was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to a family of Jewish immigrants. He completed his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, and went on to earn his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1923.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical training, Guttmacher worked as an obstetrician and gynecologist in Baltimore. In 1941, he moved to New York City to join the staff of Mount Sinai Hospital, where he served as the director of the department of obstetrics and gynecology until 1963.

In 1962, Guttmacher became president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a position he held until 1974. During his tenure, he advocated for the legalization of abortion and the expansion of family planning services. He also played a key role in the development of the birth control pill.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Guttmacher's work in reproductive health has had a lasting impact. The Alan Guttmacher Institute, now known as the Guttmacher Institute, was established in his honor in 1968. The institute conducts research and policy analysis on reproductive health issues worldwide.
