Ampere (A), often shortened to Amp, is the base unit of electric current in the International System of Units (SI). It is named after André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836), one of the main discoverers of electromagnetism. The International System of Units defines the ampere in terms of other base units by measuring the electromagnetic force between electrical conductors carrying electric current. The earlier definition of the ampere was based on the electromagnetic effects produced by the current, but since 2019, it has been defined through the elementary charge, e, explicitly setting the charge of one electron to be approximately 1.602 x 10^-19 coulombs.

As of 2019, the ampere is defined by taking the fixed numerical value of the elementary charge, e, to be 1.602176634 × 10^-19 when expressed in the unit C, which is equal to A⋅s, where the second is defined in terms of the cesium frequency ΔνCs.

The unit is named after André-Marie Ampère, a French mathematician and physicist, who is considered the father of electrodynamics. The ampere was originally defined by the force between two parallel conductors carrying current. In the 20th century, it was redefined in terms of a specific number of elementary charges passing a point per second. The most recent definition adopted in 2019 bases the ampere on the elementary charge directly.

The ampere is used widely in science and engineering to measure electrical current. Applications range from quantifying the flow of charge in electrical circuits to the specification of electrical components such as resistors and capacitors. In everyday terms, amperes describe the amount of electric charge passing a point in an electric circuit per unit time, with common household wiring typically rated in amperes to indicate the maximum safe current they can carry.

The practical measurement of electrical current in amperes is often conducted using instruments such as ammeters, which can be inserted into a circuit to measure the flow of current. More sophisticated methods involve the use of Hall effect sensors or current transformers that can indirectly measure current without direct insertion into the circuit.

Electrical safety standards and regulations often specify maximum allowable current levels for various applications to prevent overheating, fire, and electrocution. Understanding and measuring the ampere is crucial in designing and implementing safe electrical systems.
