Bladder Neck

The bladder neck is the proximal part of the urinary bladder that connects to the urethra. It is a critical component of the urinary system, playing a significant role in the storage and release of urine.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The bladder neck is composed of smooth muscle tissue, similar to the rest of the urinary bladder. It is located at the base of the bladder, where it forms a funnel-shaped extension. This extension leads to the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine out of the body.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the bladder neck is to control the flow of urine from the bladder to the urethra. During the storage phase, the muscles of the bladder neck contract to prevent urine from leaking into the urethra. During the voiding phase, these muscles relax, allowing urine to flow into the urethra and out of the body.

Disorders[edit | edit source]

Various disorders can affect the bladder neck, including bladder neck obstruction, bladder neck contracture, and bladder neck incompetence. These conditions can lead to symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and urinary incontinence.

Bladder Neck Obstruction[edit | edit source]

Bladder neck obstruction is a condition in which the bladder neck becomes blocked, preventing urine from flowing into the urethra. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including prostate enlargement, bladder stones, and certain neurological conditions.

Bladder Neck Contracture[edit | edit source]

Bladder neck contracture is a condition in which the bladder neck becomes narrowed or constricted. This can occur as a result of scar tissue formation following surgery or radiation therapy to the prostate.

Bladder Neck Incompetence[edit | edit source]

Bladder neck incompetence is a condition in which the bladder neck is unable to close completely during the storage phase. This can lead to urinary incontinence, as urine may leak into the urethra and out of the body.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for bladder neck disorders depends on the underlying cause and severity of symptoms. Options may include medication, physical therapy, and surgery.
