Bulk transport
A process by which larger particles which cannot pass through the cell membrane are brought within the cell.
Phagocytosis
The particles are engulfed by an extension of the cytoplasm (phagocytosis) which encloses them in a membrane-bound vacuole, which then combines with lysosomes, so that the particles can be digested.
Reverse process
The reverse process where the vacuole merges with the cell membrane, releases the contents of the vacuole to outside the cell membrane.
