Franco Basaglia

Franco Basaglia (1924–1980) was an influential Italian psychiatrist who proposed the dismantling of psychiatric hospitals in favor of community psychiatry. His work led to significant reforms in the mental health care system in Italy and influenced mental health care policies worldwide.

Franco Basaglia was born on March 27, 1924, in Venice, Italy. He studied medicine at the University of Padua, where he specialized in psychiatry.

In 1961, Basaglia became the director of the Gorizia Psychiatric Hospital. He was shocked by the conditions in the hospital and began to implement reforms. His work in Gorizia led to the development of the Basaglia Law, which called for the closure of psychiatric hospitals in Italy.

The Basaglia Law, officially Law 180, was passed in Italy in 1978. It marked a significant shift in the treatment of mental health in Italy, moving away from institutionalization towards community-based care.
