Indeloxazine

'Indeloxazine (INN, BAN; brand name Elen, Noin), also known as indeloxazine hydrochloride (USAN), is a nootropic and cerebrovascular agent marketed in Japan and South Korea by Eisai Co. and Korea United Pharm. It was launched in 1988. The drug is used in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease and dementia, and for the relief of the after effects of cerebral infarction.

Pharmacology

Indeloxazine enhances cerebral metabolism and increases cerebral blood flow, oxygen, and glucose utilization in areas of the brain such as the frontal cortex and hippocampus. It also has neuroprotective effects and promotes neuronal growth.

Mechanism of action

Indeloxazine acts as a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, and to a lesser extent, as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor. It also has antioxidant effects and inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines, which may contribute to its therapeutic benefits.

Side effects

Common side effects of indeloxazine include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Less common side effects include dizziness, headache, insomnia, and rash.
