Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and is one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. Johannesburg is the seat of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

Johannesburg's history dates back to 1886, when gold was first discovered on the Witwatersrand. The city was initially part of the Transvaal, a Boer republic that later became one of the four provinces of South Africa. Today, the city is a vibrant hub for arts, entertainment, and commerce.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Johannesburg is located in the eastern plateau area of South Africa known as the Highveld, at an elevation of 1,753 metres. The city is surrounded by the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve to the south and the Magaliesberg range to the north.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Johannesburg is the economic and financial hub of South Africa, producing 16% of South Africa's gross domestic product, and accounts for 40% of Gauteng's economic activity. The city is home to several of Africa's tallest buildings, such as the Carlton Centre.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Johannesburg is a cultural hub in South Africa and hosts numerous annual cultural events, including the Joy of Jazz Festival and the Johannesburg International Film Festival. The city is also home to the Apartheid Museum, which is dedicated to illustrating apartheid and the 20th century history of South Africa.

Johannesburg is a centre for learning and boasts several universities and educational institutions, including the University of Johannesburg and the University of the Witwatersrand, which is renowned for its leadership in the fields of mining and geology.

Transport[edit | edit source]

Johannesburg is served by a number of transportation systems ranging from railways, buses, and taxis to an extensive freeway network. The O.R. Tambo International Airport is the city's main airport and is the busiest airport in Africa.
