Kampala

Kampala is the capital city and largest city of Uganda. The city is divided into five boroughs that oversee local planning: Kampala Central Division, Kawempe Division, Makindye Division, Nakawa Division, and Rubaga Division. Surrounding Kampala is the rapidly growing Wakiso District, whose population more than doubled between 2002 and 2014 and as of 2014 Wakiso was reported to stand at over 2 million.

Kampala was originally built on seven hills, but it has expanded to cover more than that today. The original seven hills are: Kasubi Hill, Mengo Hill, Kibuli Hill, Namirembe Hill, Lubaga Hill, Nakasero Hill, and Old Kampala Hill.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Kampala is located in the southern part of the country, just north of Lake Victoria. It is situated at an elevation of 1,190 meters (3,900 ft) above sea level.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Kampala's economy is mainly based on services. The city is Uganda's economic hub and contributes a significant portion of Uganda's GDP. The city is filled with people running small businesses, from roadside vendors to high-end shops, restaurants and hotels.

Transport[edit | edit source]

Kampala is served by Entebbe International Airport, which is the largest airport in Uganda. Kampala also has a station on the Uganda Railway network, although trains are not currently a common mode of transport in the city.

Education[edit | edit source]

Kampala is the educational and intellectual center of Uganda, hosting the Makerere University - one of Africa's most prestigious universities.

Healthcare[edit | edit source]

Kampala is home to Mulago Hospital, which is the largest hospital in the country, as well as the teaching hospital for Makerere University College of Health Sciences.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Kampala is known for its vibrant culture, with numerous arts and music festivals held throughout the year. The city is also home to the Uganda Museum, the oldest museum in East Africa.
