Makerere University is a public university located in Kampala, Uganda. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Africa, having been established in 1922 as a technical school. Over the years, it has evolved into a comprehensive university offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines. Makerere University is known for its strong research capabilities, particularly in the fields of medicine, public health, agriculture, and engineering.

Makerere University was founded in 1922 as the "Uganda Technical College" with a focus on vocational training. It expanded over the years, adding programs in medicine, agriculture, and arts. In 1949, it became an affiliate college of the University of London, offering degree programs. It gained full university status in 1970, becoming the University of East Africa, Makerere College. In 1970, following the breakup of the University of East Africa, it became an independent national university.

The university's main campus is located on Makerere Hill, one of the seven hills of Kampala. The campus is renowned for its historic architecture and lush landscaping. It houses several faculties, administrative buildings, student residences, and research institutes.

Makerere University offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs across ten colleges, including the College of Health Sciences, College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), and the College of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS). It has a strong emphasis on research, innovation, and community engagement.

Makerere University is a leading research institution in Africa. It hosts several research centers and institutes, including the Makerere University Walter Reed Project, the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), and the Makerere University Agricultural Research Institute Kabanyolo (MUARIK). The university is at the forefront of research in HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, agricultural sciences, and environmental sciences.

Makerere University has produced many notable alumni who have made significant contributions in various fields, both in Uganda and internationally. These include former Ugandan President Milton Obote, Nobel Prize-winning author Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, and former Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere.

Despite its achievements, Makerere University has faced challenges, including strikes by both staff and students, financial constraints, and issues related to governance and academic quality. However, it continues to strive for excellence in higher education and research.
