Kuala Lumpur is the capital city and the largest city in Malaysia. It is the country's economic, financial and cultural hub, and is also a major global city with significant influence in commerce, design, arts, education, entertainment, fashion, healthcare, media, services, research and tourism.

Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 by Raja Abdullah bin Raja Jaafar, a member of the Selangor royal family, during the Selangor Civil War. The city was originally a small settlement of just a few houses and shops at the confluence of Sungai Gombak and Sungai Klang (Klang River) before it grew into a town.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Kuala Lumpur is located in the Klang Valley, on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The city is landlocked and surrounded by Titiwangsa Mountains in the east, several minor ranges in the north and the south and the Strait of Malacca in the west.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Kuala Lumpur is the economic centre of Malaysia and home to the headquarters of many multinational corporations. The city's economy is diverse, with sectors such as finance, insurance, real estate, media and the arts contributing significantly to its overall economy.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Kuala Lumpur is a multicultural and multiconfessional city, with a diverse population consisting of Malays, Chinese, Indians and other ethnic groups. The city's cultural diversity is reflected in its many cultural attractions, including its various festivals, music, dance, cuisine and architecture.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Kuala Lumpur has a comprehensive road network and a well-developed public transportation system that includes the Kuala Lumpur Monorail, the KTM Komuter, the RapidKL Light Rail Transit, and the KTM ETS train service.

Education[edit | edit source]

Kuala Lumpur is a centre for educational and higher learning institutions in Malaysia. The city is home to the University of Malaya, the oldest university in Malaysia, and several other public and private universities, colleges and schools.

Tourism[edit | edit source]

Kuala Lumpur is a popular tourist destination, with attractions such as the Petronas Twin Towers, the Bukit Bintang shopping district, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the Kuala Lumpur Tower.
