Red Dirt

Red Dirt is a music genre that derives its name from the color of soil found in Oklahoma. Although Stillwater, Oklahoma is considered to be the center of Red Dirt music, there's a separate Texas Red Dirt sub-genre as well. Outlaw Country, Folk music, and Blues are some of the genres that had a significant influence on the Red Dirt genre.

Origins[edit | edit source]

The origins of Red Dirt can be traced back to the late 1970s, when such musicians as Bob Childers and Jimmy LaFave came onto the scene. The term "Red Dirt" itself was coined by Steve Ripley, member of the band The Tractors. The Red Dirt scene began to grow in Stillwater, with venues like The Farm attracting various musicians who would jam and write songs together.

Red Dirt music is characterized by its lyrics, which often revolve around themes of love, loss, and rebellion. It's also known for its unique sound, which blends elements of Country, Folk, Rock, and Blues. Texas Red Dirt is a sub-genre of Red Dirt that has a more pronounced Rock influence. It also tends to have more polished production values compared to its Oklahoma counterpart. Notable Texas Red Dirt artists include Pat Green, Cory Morrow, and Roger Creager.
