Rugae is a term that basically means folds. For example, the urinary bladder, when empty, has these folds that expand when full.
Function[edit | edit source]
The function of the rugae is to allow the organs such as urinary bladder, stomach, or other tissues, to expand when needed.
Urinary bladder rugae[edit | edit source]
- When the urinary bladder is empty, the mucosa has numerous folds called rugae.
- The rugae and transitional epithelium allow the bladder to expand as it fills.
Location[edit | edit source]
Rugae can appear in the following locations in humans:
- Wrinkles of the scrotum
- Hard palate immediately behind the upper anterior teeth
- Inside the urinary bladder
- Vagina when it is called rugae vaginalis
- Gallbladder
- Inside the stomach
