Social group

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Social group refers to a collection of individuals who interact with each other, share similar characteristics, and collectively have a sense of unity. Social groups can be categorized broadly as either primary or secondary groups.

Definition[edit | edit source]

A Social group is a system of social relationships that link individuals together. Social groups are the basis of society. To be a member of a social group is to possess a sense of belonging, feeling that one is a part of the group community.

Types of Social Groups[edit | edit source]

There are two main types of social groups: primary groups and secondary groups.

Primary Groups[edit | edit source]

A primary group is typically a small social group whose members share close, personal, enduring relationships. These groups are marked by concern for one another, shared activities and culture, and long periods of time spent together. The goal of primary groups is actually the relationships themselves rather than achieving some other purpose.

Secondary Groups[edit | edit source]

A secondary group is a large and impersonal social group whose members pursue a specific goal or activity. Secondary groups are characterized by much less emotional depth, and less personal knowledge of one another. Examples of secondary groups include most classes, work groups, and sports teams.

Functions of Social Groups[edit | edit source]

Social groups perform a number of functions for individuals. They provide a setting in which relationships are built and maintained through regular interaction. Social groups also provide their members with a sense of identity, purpose, and belonging.

Social Group Dynamics[edit | edit source]

Group dynamics refers to the attitudinal and behavioral characteristics of a group. Group dynamics concern how groups form, their structure and process, and how they function. Group dynamics are the influential actions, processes, and changes that occur within and between social groups.
