Abdominal distention
Abdominal distention refers to a swelling or increase in the size of the abdomen, often resulting from an accumulation of gas or fluids in the intestines. It is a common symptom of various gastrointestinal disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, and gastroenteritis.
Causes[edit | edit source]
Abdominal distention can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
- Overeating: Consuming large amounts of food can cause the stomach to stretch, leading to temporary abdominal distention.
- Gas: The accumulation of gas in the intestines can cause the abdomen to swell.
- Constipation: When stool builds up in the colon, it can cause abdominal distention.
- Gastrointestinal disorders: Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroenteritis, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can cause abdominal distention.
- Ascites: This is a condition where fluid accumulates in the abdominal cavity, causing distention.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
In addition to a swollen or enlarged abdomen, symptoms of abdominal distention may include:
- Pain or discomfort in the abdomen
- Bloating
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Loss of appetite
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for abdominal distention depends on the underlying cause. It may include dietary changes, medications, or in severe cases, surgery.
