America's Health Insurance Plans

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) is a national political advocacy and trade association with about 1,300 member companies that sell health insurance coverage to more than 200 million Americans.

History[edit | edit source]

AHIP was formed through a merger of two other health insurance industry trade associations, the Health Insurance Association of America and the American Association of Health Plans, in 2003. The merger was announced in July 2003 and was completed in December of the same year.

Activities[edit | edit source]

AHIP's activities include political lobbying, public relations, and regulatory advocacy in the health insurance industry. The organization also conducts research and provides educational materials to its members.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

AHIP has been criticized for its lobbying efforts, particularly in relation to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Critics argue that the organization has used its influence to shape health care policy in ways that benefit its member companies at the expense of consumers.
