Carol Ann Yager (January 26, 1960 – July 18, 1994) was an American woman who was one of the most severely obese people in history. She is known for her extreme weight and the medical complications that arose from her condition.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Carol Yager was born in Flint, Michigan. From a young age, she struggled with her weight, which continued to increase throughout her life. By the time she was in her twenties, her weight had already reached several hundred pounds.

Medical Condition[edit | edit source]

Yager suffered from morbid obesity, a condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of body fat to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health. Her weight peaked at approximately 1,200 pounds (544 kg), making her one of the heaviest people ever recorded. She also suffered from various obesity-related health issues, including lymphedema, cellulitis, and congestive heart failure.

Hospitalization and Treatment[edit | edit source]

In 1993, Yager was admitted to Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, due to complications from her obesity. During her stay, she lost around 521 pounds (236 kg) in three months, primarily through fluid loss. Despite the weight loss, her condition remained critical.

Death[edit | edit source]

Carol Yager passed away on July 18, 1994, at the age of 34. Her death was attributed to multiple organ failure, a common complication in cases of extreme obesity.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Yager's case brought significant attention to the medical and psychological challenges associated with extreme obesity. Her story has been cited in discussions about the importance of addressing obesity through medical intervention, psychological support, and lifestyle changes.
