Deep Throat was the pseudonym given to the anonymous informant who provided crucial information to journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein during their investigation of the Watergate scandal in the early 1970s. Deep Throat's identity remained a mystery for over 30 years until it was revealed in 2005 that he was Mark Felt, the former Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Background[edit | edit source]

The Watergate scandal was a political scandal that occurred in the United States during the early 1970s. It involved the illegal activities of the Nixon administration, including the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. The scandal ultimately led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974.

Role of Deep Throat[edit | edit source]

Deep Throat played a crucial role in helping Woodward and Bernstein uncover the truth behind the Watergate scandal. He provided them with valuable information and guidance, often meeting them in secret at a parking garage in Washington, D.C. Deep Throat's information helped the journalists connect the dots and expose the extent of the Nixon administration's involvement in the scandal.

Revelation of Deep Throat's Identity[edit | edit source]

For decades, the identity of Deep Throat remained a closely guarded secret. Woodward and Bernstein referred to him as "Deep Throat" in their articles and book about the Watergate scandal, but did not reveal his true identity. It wasn't until 2005, when Felt was 91 years old, that he publicly admitted to being Deep Throat.

Legacy and Impact[edit | edit source]

Deep Throat's role in the Watergate scandal and his subsequent revelation as Mark Felt had a significant impact on journalism and American history. His actions demonstrated the importance of anonymous sources and investigative reporting in holding those in power accountable. The term "Deep Throat" has since become synonymous with anonymous whistleblowers and informants.
