From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Diamond Princess is a British-registered cruise ship owned and operated by Princess Cruises. The ship was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries at their shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan, and was launched in 2004. Diamond Princess primarily operates in the Asian, Australian, and Alaskan cruise markets.

Design and Description[edit | edit source]

Diamond Princess is a Grand-class cruise ship, characterized by her innovative design and luxurious amenities. The ship has a gross tonnage of 115,875, a length of 290 meters, and a beam of 37.5 meters. She can accommodate up to 2,670 passengers and 1,100 crew members. The ship features multiple restaurants, bars, swimming pools, a theater, and a casino, among other facilities.

History[edit | edit source]

Originally intended to be named Sapphire Princess, the ship's construction was delayed due to a significant fire during the building process. Consequently, her sister ship, which was also under construction, was named Sapphire Princess, and the original vessel was launched as Diamond Princess.

Throughout her service, Diamond Princess has been deployed in various regions, offering passengers a wide range of itineraries. However, the ship gained significant media attention in 2020 when it became one of the first and most notable cruise ships to be quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ship was quarantined in Yokohama, Japan, in February 2020, after a passenger who disembarked in Hong Kong was found to be infected with the virus. Over 700 passengers and crew members were eventually diagnosed with COVID-19, making the Diamond Princess a focal point in the early stages of the pandemic.

COVID-19 Outbreak[edit | edit source]

The COVID-19 outbreak on the Diamond Princess was a critical event in the early timeline of the pandemic, highlighting the challenges of managing infectious diseases on cruise ships. The quarantine measures and the international response received widespread scrutiny, with experts debating the effectiveness of the quarantine procedures implemented on board.

In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]

The events surrounding the Diamond Princess during the COVID-19 pandemic have been the subject of documentaries and news reports, emphasizing the human impact of the outbreak and the efforts to contain the virus on the ship.
