Eddie Large

Eddie Large (born Edward Hugh McGinnis; 25 June 1941 – 2 April 2020) was a British comedian and actor, best known for his part in the double act Little and Large, with Syd Little. The duo gained fame on television during the 1970s and 1980s. Large's persona was that of a boisterous, sometimes bumbling comic, playing the funny man against Little's straight man. Their chemistry and timing led to a successful career in live performances, television shows, and variety specials.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Eddie Large was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and moved to Manchester with his family when he was nine years old. He showed an early interest in entertainment and began his career in show business as a singer in local pubs and clubs. It was during one of these performances that he met Cyril Mead, who would later change his name to Syd Little, forming the comedy duo that would become known as Little and Large.

Career[edit | edit source]

The duo's big break came when they won the talent show Opportunity Knocks in 1971. This victory led to appearances on various television programs and eventually their own show, The Little and Large Show, which ran from 1978 to 1991. The show featured a mix of comedy sketches, musical performances, and celebrity guests, becoming a staple of British television during its run.

Despite their television success, Little and Large also continued to perform live, touring the UK and appearing in pantomime. Their act was characterized by Large's energetic comedy and Little's musical talents, a combination that appealed to a wide audience.

Later Years and Death[edit | edit source]

In later years, Eddie Large suffered from health issues, including a heart transplant in 2003. Despite these challenges, he continued to make occasional appearances on television and in live performances. Eddie Large passed away on 2 April 2020, at the age of 78, from complications related to COVID-19.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Eddie Large's contribution to British comedy, particularly his work with Syd Little, left a lasting impact on the entertainment industry. Their style of humor, rooted in the traditional double act but made fresh by their unique dynamic, influenced a generation of comedians. Large's ability to connect with audiences, combined with his genuine warmth and likability, ensured that he remained a beloved figure in British entertainment.
