Garfish (Belone belone), also known as the garpike, is a long and slender fish that belongs to the family Belonidae. Garfish are easily recognizable by their beak-like jaws filled with sharp teeth. They are predominantly found in the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Baltic Sea, inhabiting both coastal waters and estuaries.

Description[edit | edit source]

Garfish have a distinctive appearance, characterized by their elongated bodies, which can reach up to 75 cm in length, though the average size is typically around 50 cm. Their bodies are covered in small, greenish-blue scales, which give them a sleek appearance. The most notable feature of garfish is their long, narrow jaws filled with sharp teeth, used for catching prey. They have a single dorsal fin located far back on their body, close to the tail, which aids in their fast swimming capabilities.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Garfish are a marine species but can also be found in brackish waters. They prefer temperate waters and are commonly found in the northeastern Atlantic, from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea south to the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. During spring, they often move closer to shores and estuaries to spawn.

Diet[edit | edit source]

The diet of garfish primarily consists of small fish and crustaceans. They are known to be aggressive hunters, using their sharp teeth and speed to catch prey. Garfish hunt by sight, striking swiftly at fish from below.

Reproduction[edit | edit source]

Garfish reproduce by laying eggs, which are attached to objects in the water such as seaweed, using sticky filaments. This occurs during the spring and early summer. The eggs hatch after approximately two weeks, depending on the water temperature.

Fishing and Culinary Use[edit | edit source]

Garfish are a popular target for recreational fishing, especially in Europe. They are known for their fighting ability and are often sought after by anglers. In terms of culinary use, garfish are considered a delicacy in some cultures. Their flesh is light and delicate, although it can turn a greenish color when cooked, which is harmless and does not affect the taste.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Currently, garfish are not considered to be at risk of extinction. They are relatively abundant in their natural habitat. However, like many marine species, they could be affected by changes in sea temperature and salinity, pollution, and habitat destruction.
