History

The Glenora Distillery was established in 1990 by Lauchie MacLean, a local entrepreneur with a passion for whisky. Inspired by the traditional whisky-making techniques of Scotland, MacLean set out to create a high-quality single malt whisky in the rugged landscape of Cape Breton.

After years of research and experimentation, Glenora Distillery released its first batch of Glen Breton Rare in 2000. This marked a significant milestone in the history of Canadian whisky, as it was the first time a single malt whisky was legally produced in North America.

Production

Glen Breton Rare is made using traditional Scottish methods, with a few unique twists that give it a distinct character. The whisky is crafted from 100% Canadian barley, which is malted and mashed on-site at the distillery. The mash is then fermented using a proprietary yeast strain, which contributes to the whisky's flavor profile.

After fermentation, the wash is distilled twice in copper pot stills, a process that helps to refine and concentrate the flavors. The spirit is then aged in a combination of American oak barrels and ex-bourbon casks, allowing it to develop its rich and complex character over time.
