Johnny Winter (February 23, 1944 – July 16, 2014) was an American blues guitarist, singer, and producer. Known for his high-energy blues rock albums and live performances, Winter was a leading figure in the blues revival of the late 1960s and 1970s.

Johnny Winter was born in Beaumont, Texas, and was the older brother of Edgar Winter, a musician who is also known for his success in the music industry. Both brothers were born with albinism, which made them stand out visually and contributed to their unique stage presence.

Winter's career began in earnest in the late 1960s. He gained national attention after a performance at the Fillmore East in 1968, which led to a contract with Columbia Records. His first album for Columbia, Johnny Winter, was released in 1969 and featured a mix of original songs and covers of blues standards.

In the early 1970s, Winter formed the band Johnny Winter And, which included guitarist Rick Derringer. The band released several successful albums, including Johnny Winter And and Still Alive and Well. Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues legend Muddy Waters: Hard Again, I'm Ready, and King Bee.

Winter continued to record and tour throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. His later albums, such as Guitar Slinger and Roots, received critical acclaim and showcased his enduring talent and passion for the blues.

Winter struggled with heroin addiction in the 1970s but overcame it and continued to perform and record music. He was known for his distinctive appearance, virtuosic guitar playing, and deep love for the blues.

Johnny Winter passed away on July 16, 2014, in Zurich, Switzerland, at the age of 70. His death was a significant loss to the music world, and he is remembered as one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time.
