Korsakoff's psychosis

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Korsakoff's psychosis is a chronic memory disorder caused by severe deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B-1). The vitamin deficiency is usually due to alcohol misuse, but can also be associated with AIDS, cancers that have spread throughout the body, chronic infections, and poor nutrition.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The hallmark symptom of Korsakoff's psychosis is severe memory loss, particularly for recent events and new information. Many people with Korsakoff's psychosis are also extremely forgetful and may make up stories to fill in the gaps in their memory. This is not lying, but a way of filling in the blanks in their memory. Other symptoms may include confusion or disorientation, problems with vision, and loss of muscle coordination.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Korsakoff's psychosis is most commonly caused by alcohol misuse. Long-term alcohol misuse can lead to thiamine deficiency by causing poor nutrition and also by interfering with the body's ability to absorb vitamins. Thiamine is essential for brain function, and a deficiency can lead to severe brain damage.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of Korsakoff's psychosis involves a thorough examination of the person's medical history, physical examination, and mental status testing. Brain imaging studies such as MRI and CT scans may also be used to rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for Korsakoff's psychosis involves replacing the missing thiamine, stopping alcohol use, and improving diet. In some cases, people with Korsakoff's psychosis may need to be hospitalized to prevent self-harm and ensure proper care.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for Korsakoff's psychosis varies. Some people may improve with treatment, while others may not. In some cases, the condition can be fatal.
