Myristyl-benzalkonium

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Myristyl-benzalkonium is a type of benzalkonium chloride, a class of quaternary ammonium compounds used as antiseptics, disinfectants, and surfactants. It is a mixture of alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chlorides of various even-numbered alkyl chains, primarily C14 (myristyl), hence the name Myristyl-benzalkonium.

Chemical Structure[edit | edit source]

Myristyl-benzalkonium, like other benzalkonium chlorides, is composed of a benzyl group attached to an ammonium ion. It is a nitrogenous compound with the general formula C6H5CH2N(CH3)2RCl, where R represents a long alkyl chain. In the case of Myristyl-benzalkonium, R is a myristyl group (C14H29).

Properties[edit | edit source]

Myristyl-benzalkonium is a white or yellowish-white, amorphous powder, gel, or liquid. It is soluble in water, alcohol, and acetone. It has a strong antimicrobial activity against a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Myristyl-benzalkonium is widely used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products due to its antimicrobial properties. It is found in nasal sprays, eye drops, hand sanitizers, and wound disinfectants. It is also used in the formulation of preservatives for cosmetic products.

Safety[edit | edit source]

While Myristyl-benzalkonium is generally considered safe for topical use, it can cause skin and eye irritation in some individuals. It is not recommended for use on large wounds or severe burns. Ingestion or inhalation of Myristyl-benzalkonium can be harmful and should be avoided.
