Phyllis Pray Bober (1920–2002) was an American art historian and classical archaeologist, known for her significant contributions to the field of classical archaeology and art history. She was a pioneer in the study of the relationship between art and gastronomy in ancient Rome.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Bober was born in Portland, Maine in 1920. She completed her undergraduate studies at Bryn Mawr College, where she later returned as a faculty member. She earned her Ph.D. from New York University's Institute of Fine Arts.

Career[edit | edit source]

Bober served as the Dean of Graduate Studies at Bryn Mawr College and later became the Rhys Carpenter Professor of Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology. She was also the president of the Archaeological Institute of America from 1980 to 1984.

Contributions to Art History and Archaeology[edit | edit source]

Bober's work focused on the intersection of art, archaeology, and gastronomy. Her most notable work, Art, Culture, and Cuisine: Ancient and Medieval Gastronomy, explores the relationship between food and art in ancient and medieval societies. She also contributed to the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, an international research project cataloging ancient Greek pottery.
