RREB1

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

RREB1 (Ras-responsive element binding protein 1) is a transcription factor that plays a crucial role in various cellular processes, including cell growth, differentiation, and development. It is encoded by the RREB1 gene, which is located on chromosome 6 in humans.

Structure and Function[edit | edit source]

RREB1 belongs to the zinc finger protein family and contains three C2H2-type zinc finger domains. These zinc finger domains enable RREB1 to bind to specific DNA sequences, known as Ras-responsive elements (RREs), in the promoter regions of target genes. Through this binding, RREB1 regulates the expression of these genes, thereby influencing various cellular processes.

Role in Cancer[edit | edit source]

RREB1 has been found to be dysregulated in several types of cancer, including breast, lung, and prostate cancer. In some cases, RREB1 acts as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting cell proliferation and promoting cell differentiation. However, in other instances, RREB1 can function as an oncogene, promoting tumor growth and metastasis. The exact mechanisms underlying these dual roles of RREB1 in cancer are still being investigated.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Due to its involvement in cancer development and progression, RREB1 has emerged as a potential therapeutic target. Researchers are exploring various strategies to modulate RREB1 activity, such as small molecule inhibitors or gene therapy approaches. Additionally, RREB1 expression levels are being investigated as a potential biomarker for cancer diagnosis and prognosis.
